Sambo

Sambo is Russia’s representative martial. It is a mixed martial art of hitting, twisting and trowing the opponent.

What is Sambo?

Sambo is an acronym for or SAMozashchitya Bez Oruzhiya, literally meaning "self-defense without weapons" in Russian. The self-defenses that did important roles in forming Sambo martial arts are as follows: wrestling in Dagestan Republic from the Sovie, Chitaoba of the Republic of Georgia, self-defense skills of Armenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, wrestling in Mongolian styles, Savate the French boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Japanese judo etc. At that time, the Soviet Athletic and Sports Committee convened specialists from each country to study and to classify and organize the self-defense martial arts into the new folk sports. They named these new self-defense techniques as “Sambo” and it has remained it even to this very day.

Sambo, one of the martial arts courses from Spetsnaz which was a special unit of the former Soviet Union, made a great contribution to promoting the national consciousness of the former Soviet Union and it led Sambo the national sports of the Soviet Union. Thanks to the federal and international events held by the former Soviet government, Sambo could become a world-class martial art, on the purpose of using Sambo as the mean for promoting the national consciousness.

The Incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin now has been into Sambo as much as he had gone through life as a Sambo athlete. Also, soldiers, policemen, as well as politicians, businessmen, and many other people from various fields in Russia have also learned Sambo and have reached a considerable level.

The International Sambo Federation (FIAS) has been actively supporting the formation of the Sambo Federation in various countries around the world in order to foster Sambo as a world sport. Currently, more than 100 countries are joining. FIAS is opening various international events. Sambo has been selected as the official sporting event of the Asian Games in 2018 and FIAS is putting spurs to make Sambo selected as a demonstration sport in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games
