The Cheongju Early Printing Museum was started as the Heungdeoksa Temple Site Management Office on the site of Heungdeoksa Temple where the world's first metal-type printed book Buljo jikji simche yojeol (Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests' Zen Teachings) was discovered and it was re-opened in June 2000 after completing the construction of the extension. In addition to the exhibition, the museum operates several projects such as Cheongju International Printing and Publication Exposition; the management and preservation of Heungdeoksa Temple Site; research on old printing cultures and typesets; publication of museum newsletters; and publication of ancient printing-related materials.
